“Apple’s Rapid Security Response System Used to Release iOS and iPadOS Security Vulnerability Patches”

Jakarta

Apple’s Rapid Security Response system was showcased at WWDC 2022, and now it’s finally being used for the first time to release security vulnerabilities patches on iOS and iPadOS.

The Rapid Security Response system was released to make it easier for Apple to patch security holes in iOS and iPadOS. This system is different from OS updates which are generally large in size and definitely require a device reboot during the installation process.

Meanwhile on this system, the update size was relatively small (the first version was only 85 MB) and rarely required a reboot. Users can also choose not to install updates via this Rapid Security Response, and they can also choose to remove them if they cause problems.

When tested by detikINET, this Rapid Security Response update changed the OS version from iOS 16.4 to 16.4.1(a). The installation process is much faster than a regular OS update, but still requires a reboot during the installation process.

Reported by The Verge, Tuesday (2/5/2023), at first the Rapid Security Response update had problems. Namely the appearance of the message “Unable to Verify Security Response”. But the problem didn’t last long, and now it doesn’t happen anymore.

Apart from iOS, this first Rapid Security Response is also available for iPadOS 16.4.1 and macOS 13.3.1.

The advantage of Rapid Security Response over regular OS updates is that Apple can deliver these updates more quickly. So in theory, the new system is suitable for patching dangerous zero day security holes, because it can be directly used to attack specific devices.

For information, updates to patch security holes that Apple previously released, one of which is on iOS 15.6.1 and does not yet use the Rapid Security Response. At that time, the update file was larger, reaching 200 MB.
