Apple’s payment rules restrict competition, the Netherlands has found

The Dutch Antitrust Authority informed Apple of its decision last month. It became the first antitrust authority to conclude that Apple is abusing its market power in its application business, Reuters said. According to sources, the office did not impose any fine on the company, but required changes in the system for payments in applications.

A spokesman for the office declined to comment on Reuters, saying the matter was currently undergoing legal review. According to sources, Apple has asked a Dutch court to block the publication of the Office’s decision until its appeal against the verdict is resolved. The Office has previously stated that it expects to publish the decision this year.

A U.S. court last month ordered Apple to remove some of the restrictions on its App Store in a dispute with Epic Games developer. Last year, Epic equipped its Fortnite game with a payment gateway to circumvent Apple’s fee. Apple responded by immediately removing the game from its App Store platform, for which Epic subsequently filed a lawsuit against Apple.

The U.S. court ruling overrides an essential part of the App Store rules that prohibit developers from informing users of other places they can turn to to pay developers directly, instead of using Apple’s payment mechanisms. However, Epic decided to appeal the verdict because the court only partially upheld its complaint and the decision was in many respects in favor of Apple.
