Siri may soon be able to detect the movements of your lips and head to activate the voice assistant. Anyway, that’s what Apple’s patent application suggests.
With iOS 17, users no longer need to say “Hey Siri” to activate Apple’s smart assistant. In fact, Siri will now be simple. Where the Cupertino company will work on the motion detection function for its voice assistant. This novelty was revealed through a patent application filed by the Apple brand. Briefly, the document reveals that Siri may soon be able to read a user’s lips to operate it without a voice command.
Siri can detect your lip movements to trigger playback
According to the Apple Insider website, this patent called “Keyword Detection using Motion Sensing” thus demonstrates a function to detect lip movements, as well as the head, which can be used to activate the assistant. To do this, Siri will unsurprisingly take advantage of a motion sensor to track and record the user’s movements when speaking.
If the voice assistant sees that the user’s lip movements correspond to a specific command, it must execute it immediately. In the description, Apple explains that voice commands sometimes lead to unexplained triggers and erroneous responses, whether due to background noise or the voice of another person nearby. The idea of this feature is to avoid these failures.
Please note that this new activation method does not mean that Apple will remove voice commands permanently. On the other hand, one can imagine that users will have the option to deactivate the microphone in favor of gesture detection to trigger Siri. With good reason, the manufacturer specifies that deactivating the microphone allows you to gain autonomy and save processing capacity.
It remains to be seen which Apple devices will be equipped with this feature. Designed for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Apple Vision Pro. But again, this is a patent and nothing says Apple will implement its plan.
