Apple’s upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) could be a major event for the company, according to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. In addition to the much-rumored mixed reality headset and the usual software updates, Gurman expects that Apple will put the spotlight on “several” new Macs during the show.
Gurman has already reported that the company is working on a MacBook Air with a larger 15-inch screen and M2 chip, and it seems likely that this could be one of the stars of the WWDC show. Apple had introduced a redesigned M2-equipped 13-inch Air at last year’s WWDC, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the company followed up with a larger model this year.
Following the original publication of the article, Gurman reported that Apple is also testing “a pair of new high-end Macs” with the M2 Max chip and an unannounced M2 Ultra chip. The report suggests that these computers could be new versions of the Mac Studio, as the machine is over a year old and currently comes in configurations with M1 Max and M1 Ultra chips. Additionally, Apple will begin accepting trade-ins for the 13-inch M2 MacBook Air, 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro, and the Mac Studio on the same day as the WWDC keynote, according to Gurman, which could further indicate that the Mac Studio may receive an update.
Apple is also reportedly working on Macs with an as-yet-unannounced M3 chip, including MacBook Airs and the iMac. However, Gurman had noted in March that the iMac may not launch until the second half of the year, so it is uncertain if it will appear at WWDC. Gurman also suggested that it’s unlikely that Apple would introduce M2- and M3-equipped computers during the same event.
Apple has a history of using WWDC to unveil new hardware, including the first Macs equipped with Apple silicon chips in 2020, and there has been an extended wait for a Mac Pro with Apple silicon. The closest hint we have to the release of this device comes from hardware chief John Ternus, who said on March 8th, 2022, that the company would share more about an Apple silicon Mac Pro “another day.” Gurman’s report indicates that the M2 Ultra chip was originally designed for a new Mac Pro, but the computers currently being tested seemingly differ from Apple’s Mac Pro refresh.
This year’s WWDC keynote will take place on Monday, June 5th. With a lot of potential news on the horizon, people following the event should be prepared to stay glued to their screens and stocked with snacks. Apple enthusiasts can catch all the latest news by following The Verge’s coverage of the event.
Update (May 31st, 7:16PM ET): Gurman’s latest report suggests that Mac Studio upgrades may be announced during the WWDC event.
