Rumors that Apple is working on a foldable iPhone – which may or may not be called the iPhone Flip – have been running for almost as long as foldable phones have been around, and it looks like 2022 is a good bet to see the device get launched. .
The latest prediction comes from Asian computer publication DigiTimes, which has been known to be correct in its Apple diviner in the past. We wouldn’t quite bet your lifelong savings on this one coming true just yet.
DigiTimes has some solid numbers to back up its speculation, however: increased production of OLED displays and in particular flexible OLED displays made by Samsung, which could potentially turn into a foldable iPhone in the future.
After a somewhat shaky start, Samsung is now offering reliable and premium foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip with increasing regularity. There is even talk of a foldable device taking over from the Galaxy Note series in the near future.
Bend the rush
Apple is a bit more conservative than Samsung when it comes to experimenting with form factors, but company executives can now feel that they’ve given Samsung a sufficient head start – and that the technology is robust enough to be adopted by the general public.
There seems little doubt that Apple is at least considering launching a foldable iPhone: it has been filing patents on the technology for over a year now. Whether or not an iPhone Flip hits production is another matter, but one or two are apparently now on the drawing board.
Don’t expect a foldable iPhone to appear alongside the iPhone 13 in 2021. DigiTimes isn’t the only source to suggest that 2022 is the year of the Apple smartphone with the foldable screen, because other reports have suggested the same type of program.
