Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaAt the launch of the iPhone 15 series earlier this week, Apple repeatedly mentioned its commitment to protecting the environment.

In fact, Apple made a firm statement about the Watch 9 smart watch which was also introduced at an event entitled ‘Wonderlust’.

Apple labels the 9th generation Watch as a ‘carbon neutral’ product, aka emission-free. However, experts refute these claims.

Climate scientist from the University of Hawaii, David Ho, said Apple’s marketing narrative could confuse people.

He emphasized that there is not a single product that is carbon neutral. Jokingly, according to him, the Apple Watch 9 could be labeled emission-free if it sucked Co2 directly from the atmosphere.

“There are no products that are carbon neutral. It’s a bit ridiculous. This gives consumers the idea that there is a way out of this problem without reducing consumption,” he explained, quoted from MacWorld, Friday (15/9/2023).

He said Apple should explain that its products are made environmentally friendly, and do not produce excessive carbon emissions.

For example, a ship still uses fuel to move. However, ship transportation companies are investing in conservation and restoration projects to absorb Co2, so as not to increase the Earth’s temperature.

The problem is weak attempts to bond carbon to certain products. The watch has no role whatsoever in creating emissions credits.

Apple declined to comment on the note. However, he added that he already has standards like those of Verra and is carrying out verification projects using satellites and other technology.

However, Verra, who was quoted by Apple, apparently doesn’t actually eliminate additional carbon. This is found in 90% of projects as reported by The Guardian recently.

Investigation results The Guardian revealing many of the projects are driving destruction in other sectors.
