Apple’s commitment to China to accelerate the transition to renewable energy

SAN FRANCISCO (Xinhua) – Apple today announced that it exceeded its goal of generating two gigawatts of clean energy online, accelerating its efforts to help fuel China’s transition to a greener economy. The measure avoids the emission of nearly four million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, the equivalent of taking one million cars off the road for a year, through solar, wind and other renewable energy solutions, indicated the ad.

The funds will be fully spent by the end of next year and will support a wide range of projects that are expected to generate a gigawatt of renewable energy online, the announcement noted.

“Apple is committed to taking the lead in protecting the planet, addressing climate change and conserving the resources we all share,” said Isabel Ge Mahe, Apple’s vice president and managing director for Greater China.

“By working together with our partners here, we are helping to conserve the clean waters and green mountains of China and make the country even more beautiful for future generations,” he added.

Last July, Apple unveiled its goal of being 100 percent carbon neutral across its entire supply chain and across the entire lifespan of its products by 2030.

In the past year, 15 other Chinese suppliers have pledged to join the program and make their production for Apple run 100 percent from renewable energy, the company said.

This year, Apple and the Water Management Alliance renewed their long-term partnership and investment in the efficient and safe use of water in all industries in China and around the world.

The collaboration leverages Apple’s innovative approach to water conservation through its Clean Water Program, which had managed to save a total of more than 156.3 million cubic meters of drinking water by 2020, the company said.
