Apple’s AR/VR Headset: Details About Battery Pack & Connectors

Apple’s much-anticipated mixed reality headset is set to be unveiled on June 5th, and new details are emerging about its design. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the headset’s external battery pack will be similar in design to Apple’s MagSafe iPhone battery pack and will use a proprietary connector to attach to the headset. This circular connector is magnetic and twists to lock into place during use, making it secure enough to withstand movement associated with a head-mounted display. The battery pack charges via USB-C and has a similar size to two stacked iPhone 14 Pro Max phones. The headset may also have a USB-C connector for handling data, although not many details have been shared on what kind of data may need to be transferred. While a proprietary connector may be sensible for use with headsets, it is worth noting that Apple’s ecosystem already includes Lightning, USB-C, multiple MagSafe variants, and proprietary power cables for its Studio Displays. Nonetheless, Bloomberg speculates that Apple might sell additional standalone battery packs for users to swap out when the external pack’s estimated two hours of battery life runs dry.
