REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SAN FRANCISCO — Apple on Wednesday (17/11), said it would start allowing people to fix gadget which they buy. computer maker iPhone and Macs have long restricted device repair.
So far, repairs have been limited to technicians at the “Genius bars” in their shops or at authorized service centers. The limitations of this service often make device owners have to wait long and pay dearly.
“There were a few catches, but we’re happy to see Apple acknowledging what we’ve always known: everyone’s genius enough to fix iPhone,” tweet from @iFixit, which offers repair guides for various devices.
Apple’s new Self-Service Repair Program will begin in the United States. The program offers to sell tools and spare parts to people who want to work on defective iPhone 12 or 13 model handsets. Initially it will focus on the parts that are more prone to damage, such as the screen, battery, and camera.
The program will roll out in other countries over the next year, and be expanded to include multiple Mac computers.
“Creating greater access to genuine Apple parts gives our customers more options if repairs are needed,” Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams said in the release. Japan Today, Thursday (18/11).
“In the last three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to genuine Apple parts, tools, and training, and now we provide an option for those who want to complete their own repairs,” he said.
The move comes as Apple faces criticism and lawsuits over its tight control of the “ecosystem” from iPhone hardware to the apps it allows on handsets.
Laws that enshrine people’s right to be able to repair the things they buy have gained momentum across the US and at the federal level.
