Apple Will Leave Lightning Port, Not Just on iPhone

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Proprietary charging standard AppleLighting port, is just around the corner, according to prolific Apple analyst and predictor Ming-Chi Kuo.

Just days after Kuo said Apple was working on iPhone that charges via USB-C instead of Lightning, the analyst updated his tweet with clarification that Lightning-powered Apple products would also be switching. That includes AirPods, MagSafe chargers, and Apple mouse and keyboard peripherals, Mashable reports.

Kuo shared the forecast in response to a tweet he posted on May 11. In an earlier message, as quoted by Engadget, he said Apple would redesign the iPhone to feature a more universal standard port in the second half of 2023. Bloomberg later confirmed Kuo’s prediction.

As for exactly when this will happen, Kuo didn’t go into further detail than “in the future.” Comments about his first iPhone and subsequent Bloomberg reports backing it suggest the iPhone won’t throw away Lightning port until 2023 at the earliest.

Apple could choose to slowly phase out Lightning, but it might also make sense to move everything to USB-C at the same time as well.

For the non-tech savvy, USB-C is the oval-shaped charging port you’ve probably seen in the latest Android phones, modern video game controllers, and even some Apple products like the MacBook.

These devices charge and transfer data faster than Lightning, in addition to the obvious benefit of being able to use the same charging cable for every device you own.

The main benefit of Apple sticking with Lightning all this time is probably the company’s ability to charge third-party peripheral makers to use that standard, but at some point, it’s best to let it go.

Also, Apple’s motivation for moving its accessories away from Lightning may have more to do with avoiding regulatory scrutiny than creating a better user experience.

In a bid to reduce e-waste, the European Union has spent years pushing for universal charging ports and last month moved one step closer to making USB-C mandatory on all small and mid-sized electronics.
