iPhone chip maker TSMC steps according to Nikkei Asia in 2024 to a 2 nanometer manufacturing process. This means that the iPhone can work even faster, more economically and cooler.

Rumor: iPhone will get chip with 2 nanometer structure in 2024
Chip manufacturer TSMC plans to build a new factory to build chips with a manufacturing process of 2 nanometers. Production of the chips is expected to start in 2024. The company will start construction of the factory in Taiwan in 2022 and the necessary equipment will be installed in 2023.
TSMC has been the main supplier of Apple’s own A and M chips for years. The chips are known for their speed and efficiency. The current A14 chip, which is in the iPhone 12series is the first Apple chip with a 5 nanometer structure. Switching to a 2 nanometer process will provide even more speed, less power consumption and less heat. These are, of course, welcome improvements.
Chips consist of a collection of billions of transistors. The smaller these are, the more can fit on one chip and the less energy is needed to drive them. This is what the nanometer structure stands for. The lower the number, the more powerful and efficient the chip.
Where are 4 and 3?
It is said in the corridors that Apple has already placed an order for 4 nanometer chips with TSMC. These would go into production this year. From 2022, TSMC will probably offer the possibility for 3 nanometer chips. 2 nanometer chips in 2024 therefore sound like a logical next step.
If the rumors are true, the chips will be in the upcoming iPhone 13series still rest on a 5 nanometer manufacturing process. In theory, the iPhones that follow could receive a chip with a smaller structure every year. If Apple continues to release a new chip every year from now on, the A18 and M5 will both be 2 nanometer chips.
