Apple has a big announcement for the repair industry. Indeed, yesterday land manufacturer announced a new program named « Self Service Repair » which will allow users who feel comfortable to repair their devices (iPhone, Mac M1) themselves using official components and tools. This includes common repairs like battery replacement, iPhone screen replacement, camera, and more.
An Apple program to repair your iPhone yourself
As a result, users will no longer need to purchase a display, battery or other part which has been manufactured by a third party and which, by the very fact, does not meet Apple standards or safety standards. Because, thanks to the new self-service repair program, customers will have access to genuine Apple parts and tools to perform repairs.
Apple has indicated that user repair will be available first for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, followed by the Mac M1 in the future. The program will launch first in the United States in early 2022 and will expand to other countries throughout the year. As a result, consumers will reach more than 5,000 Apple Authorized Service Centers (CSAA) and more than 2,800 independent repairers with access to these spare parts, tools and manuals.
As stated by Apple, the initial phase of the program will focus on the most commonly troubleshooted items, such as the iPhone screen, battery, and camera. The ability to make additional repairs will be available later next year.
“By expanding access to genuine Apple spare parts, we are offering our customers an even greater choice if a repair is required.”, said Jeff Williams, chief operating officer at Apple. “Over the past three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of repair sites with access to genuine Apple parts, tools and training. We now offer an option for those who wish to carry out their own repairs ”.
How does the program work?
To make sure a user can perform a repair safely, Apple says it’s important that they review the repair manual first. Then, the latter will place an order for original Apple parts and tools via a space dedicated to self-repair. After the repair, Apple says, customers who return their used part for recycling will receive a credit toward their purchase. Also according to Apple, the space dedicated to self-repair will offer more than 200 spare parts and tools that will allow users to perform the most common repairs on iPhone 12 and iPhone 13.
On the other hand, the iPhone maker emphasizes that self-repair is for individual technicians who have the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. For the vast majority of customers, consulting a professional repairman with certified technicians who use genuine Apple parts is the safest and most reliable way to get a repair.
“With a design that offers remarkable strength and better repairability, we allow customers to enjoy a more durable product that retains its value for years to come.” Apple has also been offering software updates over the years that introduce new features and functionality ”, Apple adds.
Note before leaving that Apple has not yet provided details regarding the prices of spare parts and tools.
