Apple may be working on several new health features for its next Apple Watch. Insiders report this to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. For example, the upcoming smartwatch could detect hypertension and sleep apnea.
Sources report to Bloomberg that the next Apple Watch, which should be released in 2024, will have a new sensor that can detect when the user’s blood pressure is elevated. The system does not show exact measurements, but only notes whether blood pressure has increased. In the future, Apple may release a follow-up version that can measure the exact blood pressure of users. The new feature is accompanied by a kind of digital diary, which allows users to record what happened when the high blood pressure occurred.
The next Apple Watch should also have a system that can detect sleep apnea. The smartwatch will monitor the user’s sleeping and breathing habits to predict whether someone has that condition. An app can then recommend the user to see a doctor.
Bloomberg reported earlier this year that the next Apple Watch will also have a new design. That news agency also said at the time that the smartwatch will have a blood pressure sensor next year, although it was not yet clear how exactly that would work. Apple has not yet officially confirmed the arrival of these features. The company usually presents its new Apple Watches in September, along with new iPhones.
The news agency also published a more extensive study on Wednesday about the health features Apple is working on. According to Bloomberg, the first Apple Watch should have already had a feature to measure the user’s blood sugar level, but that feature is still not available. Apple is said to have set up a secret company to work on blood sugar measurements without a needle. According to the news agency, that company, called Avolonte, invested tens of millions per year in the development of such a technique for years. The development is now said to have been transferred to Apple’s Exploratory Design Group, part of its chip division.
