Apple Watch helped steal $ 500,000 from drug dealer

The case unfolded in January 2020 and was made public by federal prosecutors this week.

There are many situations where an Apple Watch can save a person’s life. Thanks to its fall detection function or its ECG, Apple’s smartwatch has frequently been highlighted for its ability to call for help before it is too late. However, other malicious people have found other uses for the watch.

the New York Post reports that a gang of 7 thieves from New York, in January 2020, used an Apple Watch to steal a large amount of money from a person. The alleged leader of the group, Darren Lindsay, bought an Apple Watch Cellular and linked it to his AT&T account.

He and his gang then hid the Apple Watch under the bumper of a vehicle belonging to a local drug dealer. The robbers apparently knew that he used to carry large sums of money. Using the watch’s geolocation feature, the thieves tracked the drug dealer to a hotel parking lot in Connecticut, nearly 150 miles from New York City.

The thieves then found the car without the driver, smashed one of the rear windows to find the money that was not there. Two members of the group then watched the vehicle throughout the night, until they saw the drug dealer. A fight ensued, in which the members of the group stole the man’s personal effects and the key to his hotel room. They then found a bag full of bundles of banknotes, totaling $ 500,000.

The men are not unrecognized by federal services, since they had already committed other crimes of the kind between 2019 and 2020. The case was made public this week by federal prosecutors, who published the photos of the robbers.
