iOS 14.6 notifies Apple Watch Series 3 users to unpair, wipe, and reset their smartwatch from backup to receive the watchOS update. Due to lack of space, it was previously impossible to update.
To update the Watch Series 3 to watchOS 7.5, users will be prompted to unpair their Apple Watch Series 3 from the iPhone during the update process and reset from backup. 9to5Mac reports that. This is because the GPS-only version of the smartwatch with 8GB has too little space for software updates.
Until recently, it was virtually impossible to update the smartwatch to a new version of the OS, because in many cases it received a message that there was not enough space to perform the update. In any case, an update required 3GB of free storage space on the smartwatch. Apple’s solution for this is that it asks users in iOS 14.6 to reset Watch. This frees up space for the latest watchOS update.
Apple has been proposing for some time now to unpair the Watch 3 and re-pair it to the iPhone due to lack of space. New is that this is automatically suggested in iOS 14.6. Previously, Apple only proposed to free up space for an update. All data and settings of the Apple Watch will be erased after the Apple Watch is backed up. With that backup, users can get their settings and data back after the update. Again, there must be enough space, but space should have become available because old updates have been removed.
MacRumors suggests that the cumbersome way of updating is an indication that Apple plans to phase out the Watch Series 3, which came out in September 2017, and that a new model of the Apple Watch will be released this year.
