A well-known hack to help a wet iPhone get back on track may not be safe after all. It has been recommended for a long time to place a damp smartphone in rice to absorb the moisture. But according to Apple, this is not recommended and the rice can even damage your iPhone. This is evident from a new document that the company shared earlier this year.

Smartphones and water were a very bad marriage for a long time. In recent years, most devices have fortunately become more or less waterproof, which fortunately makes this problem much less common. However, it can still happen that your iPhone suddenly no longer works properly because there is moisture in it.

Rice

Anyone who looks up what to do online will soon come across the trick with the rice. It is recommended to place your smartphone in a container or bag of rice and give the rice a few days to extract all the moisture.

Experts have been claiming for some time that this method is not really efficient and actually does little. But now Apple itself claims that rice can even be harmful to your iPhone. In a new support document the company writes what you should do if you receive a message that there is moisture in your device. Do not place an external heat source (such as a hairdryer), do not insert an external object (such as a handkerchief) into the charging point and do not place your iPhone in rice, it says.

What to do with a damp iPhone?

Fortunately, Apple also explains what you need to do in the same document. It is important not to connect your iPhone to the charger. Then there are four steps you need to take to try to rescue your device.

  • Gently tap your hand against your iPhone with the connector facing down to remove excess liquid. Then leave your iPhone in a dry place with some air circulation.
  • Then wait for at least 30 minutes and then try connecting your charger again to see if you still get a moisture warning on your iPhone.
  • If you get the warning again, place your iPhone in a dry area with some air circulation for at least a day. You can try again every now and then.
  • After 24 hours, all moisture should be out of the connector and you can connect your iPhone to the charger.
