Apple wants to use its own displays from 2024, starting with the Apple Watch

The Apple Watch should boot first, followed by the iPhone. This was reported by the Bloomberg newspaper with reference to internal sources (Article behind the paywall). This report is interesting from several points of view: according to some rumors, Apple wants to replace the OLED screens used so far with its new microLED technology.

It is therefore expected to use improved technology and at the same time become less dependent on suppliers such as LG and Samsung. But the new technology also offers a clear advantage: the display technology is considered to be energy-saving with brighter, high-contrast playback options.

The latest rumors in this regard now come from Bloomberg and indicate a timeline for the transition. The tech giant plans to begin the transition in late 2024 with the Apple Watch Ultra.

Bloomberg reports that Apple’s proprietary display technology will also be used in other devices, including the iPhone. However, this cannot be expected before 2025. Only then will the change for iPad and Mac follow.

Advantage for the Apple Watch

New display technology allows for brighter, more vivid colors. This has the effect of a more plastic display on the Apple Watch.

Rumors of Eisgen’s display production at Apple are older. Bloomberg first reported on Apple’s efforts to develop its own displays in 2018. The first step was to introduce its own technology in 2020. However, this has been hampered by costs associated with development and unforeseen technical challenges. Despite the delay – and there may be more due to material shortages – the technology is one of the company’s most important projects at the moment.
