Apple wants to turn iPhones into payment terminals

Apple has been working on the new function since 2020, when it paid about $ 100 million (CZK 2.2 billion) for the Canadian startup Mobeewave. The company offers a service that allows smartphones to accept payments by attaching a credit card.

The system is likely to use the Near Field Communication (NFC) chip currently used for Apple Pay. Apple’s new feature will actually bypass the introduction of new hardware, as a significant number of customers who will already have the iPhone in their pocket, said Logan Purk, an analyst at Edward Jones. However, he added that if Apple does not offer a cheaper product and a simpler platform, some entrepreneurs may be reluctant to switch to the new service.

Square, which is now widely used by small businesses, charges $ 299 for its facilities and a fee of 2.6 percent plus ten cents for each transaction.

According to sources, Apple may start implementing the feature through a software update in the coming months. Apple declined to comment on the report.

Apple is strengthening its financial technology services. In 2019, in cooperation with Goldman Sachs, he offered his own credit card and allegedly also wants to offer the Buy Now, Pay Later service.
