Apple Vision Pro
I went to America and purchased Apple Vision Pro (hereinafter referred to as Vision Pro).
As a report from the first day, we will present our first impressions using the actual machine.
The process leading up to the purchase is posted on Impress Watch as “Day 0.5”, so please take a look there for more details. This in itself was interesting as a kind of travel experience.
When Vision Pro was announced at the developer event “WWDC 2023” in June of last year, I experienced it for a short time and expressed my impressions in one word: “It’s amazing.”
You may be thinking, “What’s so exaggerated?”
However, even after purchasing it and using it thoroughly, my impression is that, “Although there are a number of things to keep in mind, it is certainly a very different device from previous ones.”
So what kind of experience is it? I would like to send it along with a photo of the actual machine.
The battery is external though…
Among the accessories, I should mention the battery and power supply.
Included battery
While many other HMDs have a built-in battery, the Vision Pro has an external battery. This seems to be to reduce the weight of the main body as much as possible.
The battery is definitely a nuisance, and it’s true that it would be better to have it built-in. On the other hand, it is technically not possible to do that now, and there is no doubt that “by choosing an external battery, we are able to guarantee quality.”
Once you use it, you’ll surprisingly get used to it. The battery has a USB Type-C terminal, from which power is supplied. In other words, you can use it for even longer than the battery life, and you can just place the battery on your desk or in your pocket.

The problem is that it’s heavy (nearly 1kg) to carry both the main unit and the battery.
In addition, it seems that there was a lot of noise on SNS that the connection terminal for the battery and the dedicated cable was “something Lightning-like,” but to be precise, it is a unique terminal that is wider than Lightning. In the first place, the structure is not designed to remove the battery and cables frequently, and there are claws to prevent them from falling off. Considering that there is no battery hot-swap feature, it would be a problem if the battery could be easily removed from this terminal. Rather than forcefully replacing the battery, it would be better to think about what to do with the USB Type-C end of the battery.
Vision Pro is a device for “essential changes in displays”
Now, let’s talk about my impressions after actually using it.
There’s actually not much difference from what I mentioned in my article last June. Technically speaking,
- Uses a display with high resolution and high color reproduction
- High performance, almost no processing delays
- Adopts highly accurate line of sight recognition, allowing you to operate without making large movements of your arm.
However, these are just “what happens when you break down the elements technically”, and if you explain it as an experience,
- The surroundings look natural, including a three-dimensional effect
- The overlapping graphics are natural and smooth.
- You can easily use the entire space
- Your arms won’t get tired even when you operate it.

It really looks like a 3D iPad application floating in space. Moreover, you can place it anywhere around you.
I’ll go into more detail next time, but the experience of watching movies and spatial videos is amazing, and being able to work using space is a refreshing surprise.

Of course, there are factors to be concerned about, such as weight and strain on the face. I get the impression that the resolution and colors deteriorate in dark places, and the UI still needs a lot of improvements.
But clearly this experience is different from what we’ve experienced so far.
To put it simply, “the experience of the world known as AR has appeared as a reality rather than a promotional video,” and “there is still a new world in the experience of operating a computer that has become commonplace.” It also means that. You could say that “a new way to enjoy videos and photos has been born.”
To that extent, this change is an “essential change in displays.” And in order to make that change a reality, it currently requires an elaborate hardware and OS combination costing $3,500.
So, what exactly is the fun of this new experience?
