In its frantic quest for content, Apple TV + has once again released the checkbook to treat itself to the sensation CODA, one of the films presented during the (virtual) Sundance festival. The platform has bought worldwide rights to the film $ 25 million, according to Deadline, thus snatching the feature film from Amazon which was also in the race. This amount is a record for the festival. The precedent dates back to last year, with Palm Springs acquired for 22.5 million by Hulu.
CODA (for “Child of Deaf Adults”), directed by Siân Heder, features Ruby (Emilia Jones), a teenager who is the only hearing person in a fishing family whose members are all deaf. She will have to choose between her passion for music and continue to help those close to her. The film obviously struck a chord with distributors, hence the price offered by Apple. CODA could also be a perfect candidate in the race for awards.
If the pitch tells you anything, it’s because it was inspired by The Aries family, a French film released in 2014 and which had been a great success in theaters (remember, the cinemas?). Moreover, we find in the production Philippe Rousselet of Pathé as well as Jérôme Seydoux.
