Samsung saw a 14.6% year-over-year decline in 2020, but that didn’t stop it from retaining its position as the world’s No. 1 smartphone supplier in annual results. It has faced fierce competition from regional smartphone suppliers such as Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo as these brands become more aggressive in global markets. In 2020, Apple and Xiaomi were the only two smartphone vendors in the top five to see growth.
Among all manufacturers, global smartphone sales fell 12.5% last year.
Global sales of smartphones to end users fell 5.4% in the fourth quarter of 2020, according to Gartner, Inc. Sales of smartphones fell 12.5% in 2020.
“Sales of more 5G smartphones and lower to mid-tier smartphones have minimized the market decline in Q4 2020,” said Anshul Gupta, senior research director at Gartner. “Even though consumers remained cautious in their spending and delayed some discretionary purchases, 5G smartphones and pro-camera features encouraged some end users to buy new smartphones or upgrade their current smartphones during the quarter.
IPhone 12 sales would have been even higher if Apple had been able to keep up with demand, but global chip shortages affected supplies.
“The virus pandemic, social distancing in factories, and growing competition from tablets, laptops and electric cars have created some of the most difficult conditions for the supply of smartphone components in many years.” said Neil Mawston, analyst at Strategy Analytics. He estimates that the prices of major smartphone components, including chipsets and displays, have risen 15% in the past three to six months.
