Apple to increase iPhone production by 30% for first half of 2021

Apple plans to produce up to 96 million iPhones in the first half of 2021, a 30% increase compared to the same period of 2020, indicated the NikkeiAsia.

Several daily sources from subcontractors say they have received production orders for 95 to 96 million iPhones, all families combined: 12, 11 and SE. Apple expects a volume of around 230 million iPhones – old and new models – for 2021. What to represent 20% better than this year 2020, which was trying for the sales of smartphones. However, these quantities could be reassessed as demand evolves.

A senior manager at a supplier observes that order levels for the next two quarters are quite encouraging: “ The iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max are performing better than we initially expected, while the demand for the iPhone 12 is as expected and that for the iPhone 12 mini is a bit sluggish ».

Apple is also preparing a ambitious production schedule for future iMacs and MacBook Pros using their own processors. Apple also has a new Apple TV under its belt for next year, adds the NikkeiAsia.

These needs weigh on the production capacities of component suppliers. Apple is not the only one to put pressure on its partners. Adding to the general tension, Xiaomi has set itself the goal of having 240 million smartphones manufactured next year, in order to take advantage of Huawei’s woes outside of China.

Components originally planned for 2 to 3 million iPads have been assigned to the iPhone 12, explains the NikkeiAsia, as an example of the methods used to meet the needs of assembly lines.
