Apple will allow installation of applications in Europe bypassing the App Store in the first half of next year, the journalist reported Bloomberg Mark Gurman on the Power On newsletter.
Users will be able to download applications directly from developer sites and install them without using the App Store. This will allow developers to avoid paying Apple’s 15-30% commission.
This feature will probably appear in iOS 17.3 or 17.4. The publication notes that Apple will tightly control this mechanism.
Last July, the European Parliament approved the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which obliges Apple to allow the installation of applications on the iPhone from any source. It came into force on November 1, 2022.
Apple opposes this law, but it will have to comply with it because otherwise it could be fined 20% of global revenue. [MacRumors]
