Harianjogja.com, JAKARTA – Apple Inc. asked to change the App Store business model that has been built since 2008. This is likely to cost Apple billions of dollars in revenue potential each year.
In a ruling on Friday, US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers said the company should give developers the option to use another payment system.
This includes access to iOS applications such as buttons, external links, or other commands so that customers can use external payment systems.
Currently developers are charged a 30 percent fee in each payment transaction. This raises questions about the impact of the ruling on the world’s largest-valued company.
In the same ruling, Apple managed to avoid the greater risk that a judge could determine the action constituted monopolistic practice under federal or state law.
The ruling has helped some investors come to their senses, although the stock fell 3.3 percent to $148.97 on Friday, marking its worst one-day drop since May.
Apple’s commissions obtained from the App Store reached US $ 6.3 billion last year. Most of these achievements come from purchases through apps and subscriptions.
The size of Apple’s potential loss will depend on how many app developers are willing to bypass Apple’s payment system.
Loup Ventures, who has been watching Apple for a long time, predicts the potential loss in commissions could be as high as US$1 billion – US$4 billion.
However, in a statement, Apple said it was a win and was not too worried about the financial repercussions.
“The court has confirmed what we have known all along: the App Store has not violated any antitrust laws. Success is not illegal. This is a resounding victory that underscores the merits of its business,” said Kate Adams, general counsel.
Apple’s adversary in the trial – Epic Games Inc., the developer of Fortnite – argued that the judge sided with Apple. “[Ini] not a win for developers or consumers,” Epic Chief Executive Officer Tim Sweeney said on Twitter.
Earlier this month, Apple said it would allow reader app developers to use external payment systems. That category includes media services like Netflix and Spotify, plus news and book apps.
However, Friday’s decision requires Apple to also apply to game developers and other categories that have historically generated more revenue for Apple.
