Apple: This new virus is capable of infecting your Mac, here’s how

Apple devices are known for their relatively high security against viruses and other malware. But one of them, called Banshee Stealerwould be able to penetrate your system with disconcerting ease.

Faced with competitors such as Microsoft or Google, Apple regularly highlights the security aspect of its devices. The brand with the apple claims for example that Android has 47 times more malware than iOS. But Apple’s operating systems are not as secure as the company claims. The latter has for example expressed concern about the proliferation of malware on macOS. One of the latest, Banshee Stealercan notably steal your password and interfere in a cryptocurrency wallet.

In order to achieve this, Banshee Stealer transmits to users a fake password prompt in order to trick them into entering their credentials. The method is simple: the software takes advantage of the execution of an application to ask the victim to update the system settings.

Banshee Stealer: a particularly formidable software

Elastic Security Labs states: “Banshee Stealer targets a wide range of browsers, cryptocurrency wallets, and hundreds of browser extensions, making it a very versatile and dangerous threat.” Worse still, the software would integrate functions that prevent experts from understanding how it works, and therefore from detecting possible flaws.

Symantec specifies: “It starts by running a Swift-based dropper that displays a fake password prompt to trick users. After capturing credentials, the malware verifies them using the OpenDirectory API, then downloads and executes malicious scripts from a command-and-control server.”
