Ammon – Apple is testing a new design for the iPhone 16 Pro phones that relies on the presence of a hole in the screen for the front camera and the Face ID system.
Apple introduced the “Dynamic Island” interactive island design in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max last year, and it is still a subject of both admiration and criticism.
According to recent leaks, Apple is currently testing initial versions of the iPhone 16 Pro phones with a hole at the top of the screen instead of the oval-shaped “interactive island” design.
The interactive island’s design has unique integration with the operating system and applications to display information and notifications.
On the other hand, Ross Young, an expert in the field of screen supply chains, expects that the interactive island design will last for at least an additional year, noting that all versions of the iPhone 16 will adopt this design.
Young reported that the relatively cheap iPhone 17 phones will also have screens with the interactive island feature and will support the ProMotion feature, which raises the screen refresh rate to 120 Hz.
Apple is also currently testing the possibility of placing the Face ID system under the screen, which may allow it to adopt a smaller screen hole design to include the front camera only.
It is worth noting that the screen hole design for the front camera is still the most widespread so far in the smartphone market, with some companies trying to adopt other alternative designs.
