The Mac is good at many things, but somehow it’s seen as not very good for gaming. This perception has some credibility, but that doesn’t mean the Mac has failed when it comes to gaming. But Apple wants to change. That visualization is due later in the year with macOS Sonoma. This year at WWDC 2023, Apple announced several features that it intends to run on the Mac.
The strength of the interface is metallic
Metal is an API created by Apple that enables hardware-accelerated graphics on Apple platforms. According to Apple, Metal is “a low-cost API, a rich shader language, tight integration of graphics and computing, and an unparalleled suite of GPU profiling and debugging tools.”
This year, new game porting tools make it easier than ever to bring games from other platforms to the Mac, and the Metal Shader Converter simplifies the process of converting game shaders and graphics code.
Metal introduces new game porting tools that eliminate months of work and let developers see how well their current game is performing on the Mac in days, while streamlining the conversion process to host game hosts and graphics code. Apple claims that the full benefit of Apple’s silicon performance significantly reduces the overall development time. This makes it easier for developers to port games to the Mac.
Big names and upcoming games for the Mac
With the M series of processors, gaming has become an interesting offering on Macs. Apple says game developers will take advantage of Metal 3 to bring exciting new titles to the Mac. Some of the big names coming to Mac include DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR’S CUT, Stray, Fort Solis, World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, and HUMANKIND. , Resident Evil Village: Winters Expansion, The Medium, ELEX II, Firmament, SnowRunner, and Disney’s Dreamlight Valley.
With macOS Sonoma, Apple is also introducing a dedicated Game Mode. According to Apple, Game Mode provides an enhanced gaming experience with smooth, consistent frame rates by ensuring that games receive the highest priority on the processor and GPU.
Game Mode also makes gaming on Macs more immersive — reducing audio latency with AirPods and dramatically reducing input latency by doubling Bluetooth sampling rates with popular game consoles like the Xbox and PlayStation. Game Mode works with all games including all recent and upcoming Mac games.
