WASHINGTON – Apple Inc (AAPL.O) filed a lawsuit against Israeli cyber company NSO Group and its parent company OSY Technologies for alleged surveillance and targeting of US Apple users with its Pegasus spyware.
Quoted from Reuters, Wednesday (11/24/2021), the iPhone maker said it is also working to ban the NSO Group from using any Apple software, services or devices to prevent further abuse.
In its lawsuit to the US District Court for the Northern District of California, Apple said NSO tools were used to target and attack Apple customers. US citizens have also been monitored by NSO spyware on mobile devices that can and does cross international borders.

Apple accused the NSO Group of creating more than 100 fake Apple ID user credentials to carry out its attacks. Apple said its servers were not hacked, but NSO abused and manipulated the servers to send attacks on Apple users.
Apple also alleges that the NSO Group was directly involved in providing consulting services for the attack, which is noteworthy since NSO has stated that it sells its tools to clients.
“Defendants forced Apple to engage in an ongoing arms race, defendants continued to update their malware and exploits to address Apple’s own security enhancements,” Apple said.
Apple said it has so far seen no evidence of the NSO tool being used against Apple devices running iOS 15, the latest version of its mobile operating system. Apple will donate $10 million to cyber surveillance research groups including Citizen Lab, the University of Toronto group that first discovered the NSO attack.
