Apple store workers in Maryland were the first to vote in the unions

More than 100 store employees in Towson City overwhelmingly voted in favor of union membership. Employees will form a Coalition of Organized Retail Employees.

A spokesman for Apple said in an email to Reuters that the company had nothing to add at the moment.

Efforts to create unions are gaining momentum in some large US corporations, such as Amazon.com and Starbucks. Apple employees in Atlanta, who wanted to form unions, withdrew their request last month, claiming they were being intimidated. Last year, some current and former Apple employees began criticizing the company’s working conditions on the Internet and used the #AppleToo hashtag.

Employees voted to join the International Union of Engineers and Workers in the Aerospace Industry (IAM). The union is described as one of the largest and most diverse industrial unions in North America. It represents about 600,000 active members and retired members from the aviation and defense industries, airlines, railways, transportation, healthcare, the automotive industry and other sectors, the AP agency said.
