Apple ships over 1.2 million iPhones to India in Q2, sees 94% growth

Continuing its growth in India driven by local manufacturing, Apple sold more than 1.2 million iPhones in the country in the second quarter (Q2) of this year, registering a massive growth of 94% (year-on-year), according to data released Monday.

According to data shared by market intelligence firm CyberMedia Research (CMR), the growth was driven by the phenomenal sale of the iPhone 12 and 13 models.

Nearly one million iPhones shipped in total were “made in India” devices.

“During the second quarter, Apple continued its momentum in the Indian market with skyrocketing annual growth, driven by increased local iPhone manufacturing. The iPhone 12 series, along with the iPhone 13 series, accounted for the most iPhones shipped to market,” the report mentions.

Apple iPads have seen an impressive 34% (YoY) growth in India and the company has sold over 0.2 million devices in the country.

“Apple iPad (Gen 9) and 2022 iPad Air accounted for the lion’s share of iPad shipments, according to second-quarter data.

CMR expects iPhones to get 4% market share from smartphones in India, while iPads are expected to register 20% market share in their respective category.

The macroeconomic environment remains challenging for smartphone brands in India, driven by inflationary pressures, a weaker rupee and lower consumer demand.

“The high-end smartphone segment continues to be immune and has benefited from the consumer trend of revenge buying in the new normal,” the report said.

Apple’s enhanced and diversified iPhone production capabilities in India, along with aggressive retail initiatives, continue to contribute to its strong growth momentum in India.

Earlier this year, the tech giant confirmed that it had started manufacturing its best-selling iPhone 13 smartphone in India.

Apple started manufacturing iPhones in India in 2017, with the iPhone SE.

In the first quarter of 2022, Apple shipped nearly one million “Made-in-India” iPhones, registering an overall growth of 22%, led by the iPhone 12 and 13.
