Apple released some of the most recent figures regarding its App Store, as well as its services. According to shared data, the services of the Cupertino giant already have more than 745 million paid subscriptions used in more than one billion devices.
Regarding the evolution of its offer, the apple company details, for example, that the Apple Pay service is now available in almost 60 countries and regions all over the world. Apple Arcade, on the other hand, includes a “library” with more than 200 games, and last year, Apple Wallet users used more than 30 million digital tickets.
The company also indicates thatSince its digital app store launched in 2008, developers selling digital goods and services will have generated more than $260 billion in revenue.
In January of last year, Apple had revealed that this figure was around US$200 billion, which means that, by 2021, developers will have generated US$60 billion in revenue. Although it does not advance concrete numbers, the apple company also claims that spending made by App Store users during the festive season in 2021 has grown significantly.
Along with the growth recorded in the last year, the App Store has generated controversy, in particular, among developers, who feel dissatisfied with the digital store’s policies, which they see as restrictive, with a 30% commission charged on all fees. subscription or payments made through the apps in question.
It is recalled that in November, following the verdict of the “epic” legal battle between Apple and Epic Games, the court that heard the case demanded that the apple company to stop preventing developers from including external payment options in the App Store. The deadline for implementing the change was set for December 9th. However, about 12 hours before it takes effect, Apple managed to get the measure postponed.
The scrutiny of regulators around the world also marks the controversies of the App Store. More recently, in Europe, the Dutch competition authority (ACM) has determined that the apple company’s policies regarding alternative payment options in dating apps violate competition laws in the country.
According to ACM, Apple will have to make changes to App Store policies, giving developers the possibility to provide alternative payment options in dating apps, until January 15th.
