Thousands of employees Apple and Samsung in Vietnam are forced to spend the night and sleep on the factory floor in order to reduce the transmission of Covid-19 which will impact production.
Quotes Bloomberg, around 150,000 employees, including Apple and Samsung in the Bac Ninh and Bac Giang industrial areas in northern Vietnam, were asked to stay in the factory area to reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
In addition, in a commercial area in Ho Chi Minh City, 22 companies with a workforce of 25,000 have also set up a special area where employees can stay overnight.
Thousands of employees sleep only on bamboo mats and tents set up in the hall of the factory building with cement floors. All employees who come to the office from home must be quarantined until they test negative for the corona virus.
“It was strange to live in a factory and it was a bit difficult to sleep at first. But my colleagues and I understood that it was necessary and only temporary,” said Nguyen Thi Mai, 28, who has worked for Samsung supplier Bac Giang for two years.
Mai’s experience illustrates the stark difference between the world’s rich and poor. Meanwhile, employees in rich countries, including owners or officials of Apple and Samsung, are protecting themselves from the corona virus by working from home or WFH.
Quotes 9to5Mac, the Vietnamese government is also claimed to provide vaccines for factory workers. Around 400,000 doses of the vaccine have been administered to employees at factories supplying Samsung, Apple and others in Bac Ninh and Bac Giang provinces.
Although Vietnam claimed success in dealing with the pandemic in its early stages, the number of Covid-19 cases in the communist-leaning country began to rise in late April.
As a result, many factories in industrial areas in northern Vietnam were temporarily closed, including factories used by Foxconn and Luxshare, the main makers of iPhones and AirPods.
In Bac Ninh province, where Samsung has two factories, several companies have asked their administrative staff to work from home and allowed production line workers to sleep in the office.
Authorities told companies to arrange for workers to sleep at the factory site for 15 days before changing shifts with another group of employees.
Foxconn, which makes networking products in the country and plans to move some of its MacBook and iPad production to Vietnam. Foxconn claims to have worked closely with the Vietnamese government to ensure they can comply with all relevant public health needs.
Meanwhile, Samsung and Luxshare have not responded to the case of employees being forced to sleep in factories.
