Apple has pulled 39,000 games from the Chinese app store in a day, writes Reuters Thursday. These are paid apps or games with in-app purchases that have not received approval from Chinese authorities.
Among other Assassin’s Creed: Identity in NBA 2K20 have been pulled from the Chinese App Store. According to analysis firm Qimai, only 74 of the top 1,500 paid games have survived Apple’s approach.
Apple initially gave developers the opportunity to obtain a license from the Chinese government until the end of June. That deadline was postponed to December 31.
Chinese app stores on Android have long followed the country’s licensing rules. It is not clear why Apple is also enforcing them more strictly this year.
China has strict rules around video games. At the end of last year, it was decided that the playing time of young people should be limited to one and a half hours per day. They are also no longer allowed to game after 10 p.m.
