If you too updated your iPhone last night (or this morning), you might be surprised to find that the new Diary app has installed itself on your desktop. It is a tool that Apple introduced in June 2023 when announcing the new iOS 17, but Deník did not come into full use until iOS 17.2. What can the application do and what is it for?

Diary application in iOS 17.2

As the name suggests, it is mainly used for diary entries. Apple works very well with the idea that we carry our phone with us practically everywhere, so it is an ideal device for writing a diary – that is, if you can let go of the fact that the diary is a notebook or a hardbound book, but your mobile phone.

However, journaling electronically opens the door to many ways to keep a journal. In addition to classic text writing (including light formatting), you can attach an image or a set of images, a voice message or a location to your diary entry. And then also the attachment that the iPhone’s machine learning will pick for you. It can be a quote, music or podcast you’ve been listening to lately, or perhaps a selection of photos from the gallery from an event, for example a vacation.

You can then mark each diary entry with a bookmark so that you can return to it in the future, for example, and also manually set your own date (by default, the date is always given as current according to the phone). You can then freely scroll through the records, filter them by content or by date of creation.

You can find other functions of the Diary application in the phone settings. Here you can lock the application using Face ID or Touch ID, or set a notification to create a diary entry. This is especially useful when you want to develop a journaling habit, so you can set a reminder every day (or every other day) at the same time to write a new entry in your journal.

Only for iPhones for now

The Diary application is available for all iPhones with iOS 17.2, so it is not limited to certain models. Unfortunately, it is not available for iPads or Macs at this time. If you don’t plan to keep a journal, you can simply delete the app from your iPhone.
