iOS 17.5 Beta 1: New Features and Updates

Apple recently rolled out iOS 17.5 beta 1 to developers. Although it’s a minor update, there are a few noteworthy additions. Let’s delve into the details.

iOS 17.5 Beta Details

iOS 17.5 beta 1, with build number 21F5048f, is now available for registered developers. They can update their devices by navigating to the “General” section in the Settings app and selecting “Software Update.” The public beta release of iOS 17.4 is also expected later this week or in the following week.

What’s New in iOS 17.5 Beta 1?

Web Installation

iOS 17.5 introduces a new feature called “Web Distribution” in the European Union. It allows developers to install apps directly from their websites. To utilize this feature, developers must opt into the new App Store business terms, which include a Core Technology Fee. However, as of now, no developers have started offering their apps through this Web Distribution feature. We can expect this to change when iOS 17.5 is rolled out to the general public in May.

Design Changes

iOS 17.5 beta 1 includes a few minor design changes across the operating system. Noteworthy changes include the redesigned “Reading Goal” icon in the Apple Books app and a new glyph for the “Passkeys Access for Web Browsers” menu in the Settings app. Additionally, the Podcasts widget now displays a dynamic color that changes based on the artwork of the podcast being played.

New Unwanted Tracking System

iOS 17.5 introduces a new system aimed at counteracting unwanted tracking through accessories like AirTags. With this system, iOS will identify tracking accessories, regardless of their certification, and assist users in disabling them. The system helps address privacy concerns, building on Apple’s previous collaboration with Google on anti-tracking technology.

More

Apart from these major updates, iOS 17.5 also includes an enhancement for MDM users. MDM solutions can now enforce a beta version during automated device enrollment, bringing enhanced control and security for organizations.

What’s Next for iOS 17.5?

While the recent updates focus on complying with the European Commission’s Digital Markets Act, it remains to be seen if there are more changes planned for iOS 17.5. The public release of iOS 17.5 is expected in mid-to-late May, serving as the final update before Apple unveils iOS 18 at the upcoming WWDC in June.
