Apple today released iOS 15.5 and iPadOS 15.5. These updates are available for iPhone 6s and all later models, all iPad Pro models, iPad Air 2 and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 4 and later , and the 7th generation iPod touch.
Along with the update, to prevent podcasts from eating up all of your iPhone storage space, the update lets you limit the number of podcast episodes stored on your iPhone while automatically deleting old episodes. Wi-Fi signal bars in the Home app have been added to let you know your HomePod is connected to the app.
In iPadOS 15.5, the “beta” label was removed from the Universal Control app, making the feature official and bug-free. With Universal Control, you can use one mouse, one trackpad, and one keyboard across multiple devices like iPads and Macs.
Arguably the most interesting change in iOS 15.5 is the inclusion of the function “External Link Account Entitlement» for reading applications. These are applications that provide digital content in formats such as magazines, newspapers, books, audio, music, and video. After the update, developers offering reading apps in the App Store will have the option to link subscribers to an external website to create an account outside of Apple’s in-app payment system.
With this update, the Photos application has a new list of “sensitive places”. Photos taken in an area deemed “sensitive” will not appear in memories. The list includes “various Holocaust concentration camps and memorials”.
iOS 16 arrive…
More than 25 security fixes related to iOS 15.5 and iPadOS 15.5 have been listed on the Apple security updates. To update your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > Software Update.
The release of iOS 15.5 comes less than a month before Apple announces its next iOS 16 update at its annual developer conference.
