Apple Releases Guide to Helping Check iPhone and iPad Security

Apple released a 20-page guide Useful for anyone who wants to check the integrity of their iOS device as well as the sensitive information they share. These tips are available elsewhere on the support sheets on the Apple site, but this guide presents them in a more practical form.

Each main tip is accompanied by some explanations as well as links to more complete sheets, if applicable:

  • Keep your device up to date
  • Use Touch ID or Face ID
  • Activate two-factor authentication to strengthen the security of your Apple account
  • Check the privacy settings of your apps
  • Check the people with whom you share your geolocation and data
  • Remove unknown third-party apps
  • Remove unknown configuration profiles

For example, if you suspect that your iPhone or iPad has been used without your knowledge, Apple recommends checking to see if a fingerprint or face has been added in Settings > Touch/Face ID et code (adding biometric data requires the device code).

Likewise, it’s good to check that you don’t unintentionally share your geolocation or photos with someone. To do this, go to Locate > Me and Photos > Albums > Shared Albums. This also applies to calendars, reminders, Apple Watch activities …

In short, this is common sense advice, but a reminder doesn’t hurt. Apple has also published three lists to methodically verify the following aspects: stop sharing data with someone, check that no one can see their geolocation and check that no one has access to their account. All of these cards are in English only, but should be translated soon.
