In the most recent quarters we had told you that Apple was plummeting, with returns that paled before those of other giants such as Samsung or Huawei. However, everything changed in the last quarter of 2021, where the company regained the throne.
According to the analysis firm Canalys, in the last quarter of 2021 Apple retook the position as the #1 smartphone manufacturer in the world, after having lost several positions in previous quarters. The apple company had a 22% market share, slightly lower than the 23% share it had in the same quarter last year. Although this seems strange, this has a bit to do with the slowdown in the market in general, which barely grew 1% compared to the same period in 2020, due to the return of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Omicron variant.
There are 2 main reasons why Apple rose to the top spot. First of all, there is the great demand and good reception that the iPhone 13 has received; and secondly we have the launch of this device in China, the largest market in the world. Despite the fact that there are still big problems in the world for the supply of raw materials and components, the most affected were the small manufacturers: Apple is recovering and that means that it can already begin to satisfy the demand, a problem that it had in the most recent quarters.
In terms of global locations, Samsung took second place with a 20% market share and lost the #1 position it held the previous quarter with 23%. On the other hand, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, all Chinese manufacturers, closed the top 5 with shares of 12%, 9% and 8%, respectively.
