Apple now has one in seven iPhones built in India. The company produces fourteen percent of the country’s smartphones, in an effort to diversify the production process. Until last year, all iPhones were still produced in China.
Bloomberg mentions that figure based on anonymous sources. In the past quarter, Apple had fourteen percent of its mobile phones built in India. Of that percentage, 67 percent is built by Foxconn, which also produces phones in China. Another seventeen percent of the phones are made by Pegatron, the rest by Wistron. In total, this concerns fourteen billion dollars in telephones, says Bloomberg.
Apple started producing phones in countries other than China a year ago. Factories in India make iPhones, and the company has MacBooks built in Thailand. Apple Watches have been produced in India for some time.
With this move, Apple wants to become less dependent on production in China. This poses risks if the Chinese government were to impose restrictions, which is not unthinkable given the current geopolitical tensions.
