Apple Proposes Opening NFC Technology in iPhone to Third-Party Services – European Commission to Review

Information has emerged that Apple has submitted a proposal to various payment services on how NFC technology could be used and opened in iPhone smartphones. This means that third-party services could use it independently of Apple Wallet.

Until now, Apple has controlled the contactless capabilities of its iPhone smartphones, allowing only the Apple Wallet service and app. However, Europe has not been satisfied with this, wanting to reduce the company’s monopoly position and restrictions in this payment solution.

According to information available to Reuters, Apple has submitted a specific proposal for how NFC technology could be used. Unfortunately, the exact details are not known to be able to evaluate this solution. Banks have previously complained that Apple has too much power to limit the use of contactless payments exclusively through Apple Wallet.

PayPal has also been one of several companies to raise concerns about unfair competition with the European Union. The European Commission will now gather feedback from other payment systems and customers on Apple’s offer to see if it is adequate. Admittedly, this is pretty important information that could change our usage habits.
