LIVE Techno – Market intelligence firm TrendForce has cited the possibility that Apple could overtake Samsung to become the leader in the global smartphone market, following the upcoming launch of the iPhone 15.
Historically, Samsung’s position as the best-selling smartphone brand has seemed very challenging. That’s because the company has a wide variety of smartphone models.
They range from cheap, mid-market phones, to flagship models that compete with the iPhone Pro and Pro Max. In contrast, Apple targets almost exclusively premium buyers – only the iPhone SE is marketed at the mid-range and none of the segments at all entry-level.
This makes it almost impossible for the company to compete with Samsung in terms of volume. Apple could overtake Samsung this year with the iPhone 15, according to the 9to5Mac website, Thursday, September 7, 2023.
Samsung continues to lead in production rankings, shipping 53.9 million units in Q2. However, this sector experienced a decline of 12.4 percent QoQ.
Amidst global economic challenges and intense competition, coupled with the waning effects of its flagship smartphone launch earlier in the year, Samsung’s performance in Q2 lagged compared to the same period last year.
Even though Samsung launched a new foldable model in Q3, its impact on overall growth is not expected to be that big given the relatively low sales volume compared to the Galaxy S series.
In the second quarter, Apple typically has its weakest quarter in terms of production due to the switch between the old and new models. Output for the second quarter totaled 42 million units, marking a 21.2 percent decrease from the previous quarter.
Interestingly, Apple and Samsung are neck and neck in their annual production projections. If the iPhone 15 series outperforms market expectations, Apple has a good chance of pushing Samsung away from its longstanding position as a global market leader.
TrendForce shares the pessimism of other market intelligence firms regarding the size of the smartphone market as a whole. They noted the views of two other big players.
Both Counterpoint and IDC agreed that this year will see its lowest smartphone shipment rate in a decade.
Demand in consumer markets such as China, Europe and North America has not shown a significant increase as we enter the second half of this year.
Even if the economic indicators in the Indian market are improving, it is still difficult to reverse the decline in smartphone production globally.
TrendForce predicts that the smartphone market may undergo another shift in Q2 this year due to unfavorable global economic conditions, and that production in the second half may decrease even more as a result.
Welcoming 2024, the outlook for the economy is currently less optimistic. The research firm expects global production to increase by 2-3 percent annually, depending on regional economic trends.
