Apple plans to withdraw from cinemas because films flopped | Life & Knowledge

Apple is putting the brakes on a billion-dollar project: The iPhone company is planning to withdraw from the cinema! The tech giant wants to show significantly fewer films from its streaming service “Apple TV+” on the big screen in the future. This is what the business portal reports „Bloomberg“.

Reason: Almost all films flopped in cinemas! Most recently, Apple only showed the action comedy “Wolfs” in US cinemas for one week despite a top-class cast with George Clooney (63) and Brad Pitt (60), after which it was launched on the streaming service.

Director and Clooney disappointed

The big start: canceled at short notice! Even director Jon Watts (43, “Spider-Man Homecoming”) only found out about Apple’s change of plan a few days before. Vanity Fair said disappointedly: “I always thought of this film as a movie. We made it to keep it in Evil to see.”

Clooney also admitted: “Of course I would have liked a wider release.” According to media reports, he and Brad Pitt are said to have even accepted salary cuts so that the film could be released in theaters – and that is now not happening. Word of the short-term break in the deal is likely to spread in Hollywood, as it could make it more difficult for Apple to hire actors.

That should be the model for the future: mini-runtime and very few cinemas. But the company from Cupertino (US state of California) doesn’t want to do without it completely. Possibly also to still have a chance at Oscars.

Apple TV+ was the first streaming service in 2022 which won the coveted Oscar for Best Film. The group then celebrated this as “historic”.

Will Apple have a hit film next summer?

Even a particularly expensive film should NOT be on the scratch list despite the change in strategy. At the end of June next year, Apple wants to bring the racing drama “F1” into cinemas. According to rumors, the company has planned a budget of 300 million dollars for the film – Brad Pitt plays the lead role again.

Even after that, according to the “Bloomberg” report, Apple still wants to produce high-budget films. However, these should then be more in the range of 100 million dollars. The total budget for all productions should remain around one billion dollars per year.
