Apple Pencil Pro: how to avoid latency effects on your iPad

It may happen that the Pencil Pro used on iPad Pro M4 or l’iPad Air M4 either suffers from fairly significant latency problems when drawing. There are testimonies galore (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8…) and some solutions that seem effective.

On several occasions, the problem was resolved by removing the protective case from the iPad or changing it to another model, such as those designed or recommended by Apple. The faulty hulls had in common that they were equipped with magnets presented as stronger than average or that they used a very magnetic rear support. When this support was detached and only the protective shell remained, the Pencil’s erratic behavior problem disappeared.

Several models of this type of hull have been cited, at ZryXal, Zugusome variations at ESR or a TomToc Smart FolioFor example. It seems wise to prefer protections that are more classic or which do not emphasize the strength of their magnetic support. This phenomenon is not unique to iPads. As evidence this discussion about the stylus of a Galaxy S24 Ultra whose operation is disrupted by the presence of a case equipped with a MagSafe equivalent (which is of little interest since Samsung has not adopted Qi2) and an accessory such as a magnetic battery.

Unless there is a problem with the hull, you will have to look at some adjustments. At Procreate we advises to disable Zoom-related options in the “Accessibility” section of iPadOS. The publisher also cites the presence of a screen protector, some might be more annoying than others. Procreate finally suggests not having the iPad charging when using its app, apparently this has caused problems for some users.
