Flyover is a built-in feature of Apple Maps that allows you to view a map from above in 3D. You will not be presented with satellite images and can therefore explore an area from all angles. From now on, the function is also available for more Dutch cities, such as Amsterdam.
The Flyover feature is not new. Not at all actually. Flyover was already introduced for the application in 2012 Apple Maps, with the release of iOS 6. However, over time, Apple has made it possible to view more and more cities in 3D, so you don’t have to rely on the standard map views offered by many mapping applications. Sometimes a 2D view is just not enough to see where you need to go. And otherwise it’s just cool to be able to view a city in all its glory from a mobile device. You can also zoom in and of course turn around buildings.
Apple Maps: Flyover in Amsterdam
Previously, Flyover in Apple Maps was already available in the Netherlands, but at the time only in three cities: Rotterdam, Utrecht and Eindhoven. Now a number of major cities in the Netherlands are added, namely:
- Amsterdam
- Haarlem
- Zandvoort
- Bloemendaal
- Heemstede
- Hoofddorp
- Zaandam
- Aalsmeer
You can activate Flyover very easily in Apple Maps. You just need to look up the city or an address in the city and then tap the 3D icon. The map view then switches to the 3D view, after which you can explore a city completely digitally. Apple also released a cool feature called Flyover Tours that gives you a tour of the most important places. Unfortunately, this functionality is not available in the Netherlands. So you cannot request a tour and thus learn more about the city you are in now. Whether that option will ever be rolled out cannot be said with certainty.
