Apple Mac Studio: YouTuber points out difficulties in upgrading SSD storage

Recently Mac Studio was dismantled by the Max Tech channel, where it was shown that Upgrading your computer’s SSD can be feasiblehowever now YouTuber Luke Miani points out that increasing the storage of Apple’s computer may not be that simple.

Miani did some experiments with Mac Studio SSDs. The first one involves formatting one of them and inserting the storage into another Mac Studio, which didn’t work even though the computer recognized the SSD. This was actually to be expected, as Apple mentions the following on the Mac Studio support page:

Mac Studio SSD storage is not user accessible.

As such, Apple recommends that you already buy the Mac Studio with the storage you want, which seems like a good choice, considering that replacing an SSD or installing a new one in the empty slot is a little more complex.

However, this does not mean that exchange is impossible. According to Mac Rumors, to use another SSD in Mac Studio, you need to do a DFU restore (firmware update with macOS IPSW package) on your computer to ensure that the storage is readable and bootable.

Also, both modules must be the same size and manufacturer, so although the conditions aren’t the simplest, it’s possible to upgrade SSD storage in Mac Studio.
