Although laptops Apple MacBook Pro they’re not exactly considered gaming machines, their GPUs aren’t exactly weak. The problem is mainly in the weak support of game studios, there are not many games for this platform. However, optimization is not always exemplary, so the high theoretical performance is not always fully utilized. In any case, the hardware itself can be powerful, as new tests show. Specifically, it is the GFXBench benchmark, where the results appeared, for example, in the Aztec Ruins test at a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels, where all three new processors and their GPUs were tested.
We’ll start with the strongest, and that’s it Apple M3 Max. The latter can have 30 or even 40 core GPUs. In the tests, he had an average of 28.2 thousand points and about 438 fps. If we remove the outliers, the desktop RTX 3080 has essentially the same performance, at 28.7 thousand points. The mobile GeForce RTX 4080 Laptop is doing similarly with 29.3 thousand points. However, the GPU in the Apple M3 Max surpasses, for example, the desktop Radeon RX 6800 with 28 thousand points. If it is possible to use the high performance in practice, it should be a very powerful gaming iron (definitely for a laptop).
If we go a notch lower, here we are Apple M3 Pro. Its GPU can have 14 or 18 cores and in GFXBench it reached 12.8 thousand points and slightly over 199 fps. This is roughly the area of the desktop GeForce RTX 3060 (13.1 thousand points), which the mobile one surpasses with 11.9 thousand points. The mobile RTX 4050 has similar performance (13.1 thousand points), while the desktop Radeon RX 6600 is slightly more powerful (13.6 thousand points).
And finally, there is the basic one Apple M3. We are talking about the 10-core GPU, which in the test reached about 7.7 thousand points and 120 fps. You can’t expect miracles here, but the same result is obtained, for example, by the mobile GeForce RTX 3050. The M3 outperforms, for example, the desktop Radeon RX 6400 (6.5 thousand) and is significantly more powerful than the otherwise very solid iGPU in AMD processors, the Radeon 780M, which only has 3.8 thousand points. In any case, it must be noted that this is just one benchmark out of many and it mixes Vulkan, Metal, OpenGL and DirectX interfaces, so it must be taken with a bit of a grain of salt.
