Apple M2 Will Come First on MacBook Air

After Apple M1 showcased in 2020, many users were waiting for the M2 to come out of curiosity about the chip’s performance Apple Silicon his successor.

According to Dylan via Twitter account @Dylandkt, the new M2 will be released in 2022, along with the new generation MacBook Air. Before M2 was released, Apple seems to be releasing the M1X first, as quoted by detikINET from Ubergizmo, Friday (9/7/2021).

The M1X is said to be available on the MacBook Pro in September. This variant seems to have higher performance because it is used in the ‘Pro’ variant which is intended for heavier use than MacBook Air.

The M1X is made using TSMC’s N5P process, using the same 5nm fabrication as the M1. The core architecture is also said to be the same as the M1, namely the Firestorm and Icestorm cores, as in the A14 chip.

According to Dylan, the M1X will be equipped with a 10-core CPU divided between eight fast cores and two power-efficient cores. Unlike the M1 which has four fast cores and four energy efficient cores.

While the GPU will increase considerably compared to the M1 which has 7 or 8 cores. On the M1X the number of GPU cores will probably double, or even more, quadruple. In addition to the MacBook Pro, the M1X may also be on the new Mac Mini.

Then about M2, it is likely that the number of cores will be less but use a new architecture and node, which may have a faster clock speed. This rumor is in line with previous rumors that Apple has ordered a 3nm chip for 2022 that will be used in the iPad Pro.

It is assumed that the chip for the iPad Pro will be the same as the chip used in the MacBook Air, because both products use passive cooling. Unlike the MacBook Pro variant that uses active cooling, which may be needed by the M1X because its performance is – it is assumed – faster.
