Apple is suing a former employee for leaking confidential information to journalists and employees of other companies, including device details such as the Journal app developed by the company and the Vision Pro. In the lawsuit filed ten days ago in California state court, the employee named Andrew Aude; It is stated that it also leaked information such as strategies, number of employees and other product hardware features.
Between June and September 2023 alone, Aude allegedly contacted a Wall Street Journal journalist whom Aude called “Homeboy” more than 1,400 times using an encrypted messaging app. It was also stated that Aude sent more than 10 thousand text messages to another journalist at The Information.
Apple also accuses Aude of leaking a list of the Journal app’s latest features in an April 2023 phone call with the same reporter.
Aude started working at Apple in 2016 as an iOS engineer focused on optimizing battery performance. Apple’s lawyers stated that Aude had access to information about Apple’s most sensitive products due to his position.
The company states that these leaks were not discovered until late 2023. Apple representatives said that when they first met with Aude in November 2023, Aude denied being involved in the leaks and stated that he did not have his Apple-issued iPhone with him. However, Aude then allegedly wanted to go to the toilet and permanently deleted a significant amount of evidence from his device, including the Signal app on his phone.
It is stated that in the second meeting on December 12, Aude admitted that he had leaked the information to at least two journalists. The company sued Aude, who was fired three days later; He is demanding the return of compensation, bonuses and stock options.
