Apple Launches Tool to Alert Users Targeted of Government Attacks

A Apple detailed how it will alert users when it detects possible intrusion into the account or installed spy program that compromises the user’s security. In a post published on the official website, the company spoke about the notifications sent to the virtual email addresses and iMessege associated with the Apple ID as a way to help the user to know if he is in the crosshairs of criminals or government agents.

According to Apple, anyone who suspects something can go to appleid.apple.com to see if it has been exposed in any way, as a highlighted message will highlight the threat notification. As you get more details, the site will display more details about what happened, when it happened, and what should be done to fix the problem.

Please note that such notices will never contain clickable links, downloadable content or prompts for login data such as passwords or verification codes. Both in messages received by e-mail or on the cell phone, there will always be a request to visit the Apple ID website in order to check what happened.

In order not to be the target of this type of occurrence, the company recommends:

  • Update devices with the latest software;
  • Secure devices with a password and two-factor authentication for the Apple ID;
  • Install apps from the App Store only
  • Use strong and unique passwords;
  • Don’t click on links or attachments from unknown senders

Apple says it is concerned about the use of spyware and other strategies used to spy on, threaten or coerce people, especially those in socially targeted industries such as activists, critics, politicians, digital influencers or journalists.

Lawsuit against the NSO Group

Apple has proven itself a company focused on ensuring user privacy in 2021, whether it’s with App Tracking Transparency (ATT) — which lets you see what mobile features each app uses — or with its online privacy tools like iCloud Private Relay and the possibility to create emails just to receive spam.

But the most recent move was the lawsuit against the NSO Group, accused of deploying spyware allegedly backed by the Israeli government. The Pegasus spy program was created to spy on a small number of notables across multiple platforms, including Android, and would be a “blatant violation” of federal and state laws in the United States.

The lawsuit alleges that the way the Pegasus app was deployed on iPhones of Middle Eastern activists is a serious violation of Apple’s terms of service and consumer privacy. As a result, the lawsuit asks that the NSO Group be barred from using any program or device manufactured by it.
