The apple brand now allows you to order spare parts and tools to be able to repair your iPhone yourself, but the iFixit platform, which defends the right to repair, remains skeptical.
Apple announced its self-service repair program last November, to allow its customers to repair their iPhone themselves. This program is initially launched in the United States and from now on, users across the Atlantic can purchase parts and tools for iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and iPhone SE 3 from Apple.
Among the available parts, we find the battery, the loudspeaker, the camera, the screen, but also the drawer for the SIM card. The repair program will then extend to other Apple products, and will arrive in other markets including the European continent. Despite some good ideas in the program, the iFixit platform is nevertheless disappointed.
Some good ideas
The iFixit platform, which specializes in smartphone repair, remains skeptical about Apple’s program.
She was initially optimistic when the apple brand was announced in November 2021, particularly on the part availability time who is 7 years old, tool retail previously only Apple technicians could obtain them, or the fact that the repair guides are free and available to everyone on the manufacturer’s website.
iFixit also recognizes that the prices offered are consistent with those of independent repairers, but the platform now says it is disappointed and skeptical.
negative points
“While this is a big step forward for repair and a game changer for mighty Apple, the program does not do what right to repair legislation around the world is intended to do. To do. »
iFixit
The platform explains that a genuine right to repair will give independent repair shops a chance to compete in this market, thereby reducing the cost of repairs for everyone.
Additionally, iFixit is critical of the obligation to verify the serial number (IMEI number of the iPhone) in Apple’s payment process to order spare parts. The Apple site also requires pairing the new part using software provided.
This could therefore allow the Californian manufacturer to block repairs in the future, whether on the side of individuals or professionals.
